Definition

For a set of pairs of data points

Given k+1 data points:

(x0,y0),(x1,y1),,(xk,yk)

The forward divided differences are defined as:

[yν]:=yν,ν{0,,k}
[yν,,yν+j]:=[yν+1,,yν+j][yν,,yν+j1]xν+jxν,ν{0,,kj},j{1,,k}.

The backward divided differences are defined as:

[yν]:=yν,ν{0,,k}
[yν,,yνj]:=[yν,,yνj+1][yν1,,yνj]xνxνj,ν{j,,k},j{1,,k}.
